Walk, Trot, Run: One Author’s Journey from Novice Writer to Multi-Book Publishing Contracts

Friday 4:00 Room 1

Presenter: Debbie Burns

SESSION DETAILS:

Debbie Burns will talk about her journey from novice writer to traditionally published author with multiple contracts from one of America’s top ten publishers (Sourcebooks). She’ll highlight milestones throughout her career, including rising above rejection to landing her first agent for a young adult manuscript, deciding when to seek new representation, and being awarded her first three-book deal. Working with a mid-sized publisher resulted in an entirely new learning curve. Debbie will share insight on working with a traditional publisher (publication pace, expectations, and typical processes), discuss how it’s different from indie publishing and how it’s similar, and offer advice about what she’s learned along the way.

Debbie Burns
Debbie Burns is a best-selling author of the Rescue Me series (a seven-book contemporary romance series featuring shelter animals and their human counterparts) and of stand-alone women’s fiction. A former conservation biologist turned writer, Debbie’s path to publication involved drafting multiple manuscripts and lots of trial and error (and rejection) before signing with an agent and landing a three-book publishing deal. Since being awarded this first contract in 2016, she has signed two additional multi-book contracts and completed eight manuscripts. While her books have earned many awards and commendations, including a starred review from Publishers Weekly and the 2019 HOLT Medallion, her favorite praise is from readers who’ve been inspired to adopt a pet in need from their local shelter. You can also find Debbie on Instagram (@_debbieburns), on
