    In his meticulously researched and award-winning book, Embattled Farmers, IPNE member Richard Wiggin has documented the diverse experiences of 256 ordinary men from one Massachusetts town who served on both sides of the Revolutionary War. In this lecture, Mr. Wiggin will discuss the perspectives of these men themselves – farmers, merchants, African-American slaves and others who held a variety of military positions – and the stories that give a human face to the War of Independence. Book sales and signing will follow the lecture.

    For the first time in the 58 years of the New England Book Show, there is a category for especially for small publishers!

    Self-publishers and publishers who release fewer than 10 books a year can submit to the following categories at the reduced fee of $20 for Bookbuilders of Boston members:

    ·         Small/Self Publishers, Illustrated: Books of general interest.

    ·         Small/Self Publishers, Non-Illustrated: Books of general interest.

    ·         Small/Self Publishers, Covers: Books of general interest.

    Of course, you can also submit to any of the other categories as well.  In addition to print books, there are categories for eBooks, Apps, Digital Media, & Multimedia, and Book Covers & Jackets.

    Winning books are selected for their design, quality of materials, and workmanship. The winning entries will be displayed at a festive dinner at Boston Symphony Hall on May 5, 2015 at 6pm.

    Winners will be provided with a graphic that they can feature on their book cover, and will be invited to participate in the Educational Workshop "The Winners Circle" next Fall.

    Selected winners will also have the opportunity to have an interview featured on the Bookbuilders’ blog.

    Crystal Ponti, Blue Lobster Book Co.Blue Lobster Book Co. was founded by marketing industry veteran Crystal Ponti, who has worked for and consulted with some of the largest sites in the world including Answers.com and Google. Prior to working at Answers, she spent a number of years as a business and marketing planning consultant helping entrepreneurs plan, launch, and grow their businesses.

    Since then, Crystal has focused on book marketing. Most recently she served as Managing Editor, Contributing Author, and publisher of the books The Mother of All Meltdowns (a parenting bestseller) and Clash of the Couples. She also blogs at MommiFried, an outlet for her creative writing and a way for her to share her later‐in-motherhood experiences with all women and parents, is a Huffington Post blogger, and a regular contributor to Felicity Huffman’s site What The Flicka? and Business 2 Community.

Acme is a web to print manufacturer of hard cover and paperback books of runs as few as one. The edition division binds long runs of art books, yearbooks, history books, textbooks, and more.     I confess--I’m a digital hoarder. I attribute it to all the research I do to write historical fiction. Over the years, I’ve taken notes from countless books to ensure I’m accurately portraying any historical figures, cuisine, and cultures I’m writing about in a novel. There’s a delicate balance in historical fiction. The amount of research needed to move comfortably within a narrative is tremendous, and as a writer, you don’t want to spool out endless facts just because you found dozens of fascinating details in your sources. Soot houses dotting the medieval Irish landscape may provide just the right touch of authenticity, but an expository paragraph on their construction and functionality bogs down the narrative.

    In recent years, the ability to find free, high quality resources online has been a tremendous boon for people across the world. The last week of October is International Open Access Week, and it celebrates a revolutionary movement in the Digital Age. Harvard University has played a central role in making its research freely available worldwide through the DASH Project, which launched in 2009. They encourage testimonials around the globe to show how the resources they’ve amassed have benefitted people. Peter Stuber, director of the Harvard Office for Scholarly Communications, offers his book on Open Access for free on the DASH site. It’s a great overview of this new movement and how its uses are limitless.

    How has it helped me as an author? I love to study the Ancient Near East. Reliable resources that cover Mesopotamia’s history thoroughly have been frustratingly far and few between. Works published in the mid-twentieth century have proven to be incomplete understandings of Sumerian culture. Through DASH, I now have access to the newest research done by faculty and students at Harvard, among other institutions as more and more universities adopt the Open Access model. Satellite photos taken during the Cold War reveal ancient trade routes in the Middle East that were previously unknown, and are freely available. The world I write about now feels much more complete.

    Open Access goes beyond the DASH model. The Digital Public Library of America was conceived after a conference on the history of publishing at Radcliffe in 2010. It hosts more than 8 million sources online from museums, libraries, and archives. From Prohibition to the history of social movements in the US, it serves as an amazing resource, and authors can find a wealth of information to help develop their works. Additionally, OpenCulture.com has films, audio files, courses, books, and more archived online. While writing a short story about Mesopotamia for a literary journal, listening to a professor read the Epic of Gilgamesh in the original Akkadian language was incredibly inspirational, and help me infuse the story with a bit more atmosphere that I may not have otherwise been able to include.

    These educational sources help everyone--not just people who write historical fiction. New research on social sciences, medicine, and technology and beyond is available for writers of any genre and style. If you add anything to your writer’s toolbox, bookmark these sites and spread the word.

    We had a perfect fall day for the Boston Book Festival. On October 25, more than 25,000 people came to Copley Square to attend sessions and visit dozens of vendor booths. IPNE’s table was bustling with activity all day, and it was fabulous to be part of it. I was one of 16 authors who signed books, and we had more than 50 books on display from other IPNE members. If you sent your books to us to put on display, rest assured, they got a lot of attention!

    For me, the timing couldn’t have been better. My third novel, Whiskey and Rue, which is set in Tombstone, Arizona, was slated for release that weekend to commemorate the 133rd anniversary of the gunfight at OK Corral. To have the official launch take place at one of Boston’s best public events was wonderful, and I was grateful to IPNE for the opportunity to showcase my work there. If you haven’t taken advantage of the benefits IPNE offers, consider getting involved in the Boston Book Festival next year. Even if you can’t be there in person, having an ad in the catalog is well worth it--people were eager to grab a copy, and having a book on display generates plenty of interest as well!

    It was fun being immersed in all the activity. While I was there to promote my new novel and talk about how I came to my “theme” as an authorundefinedfinding real women who have been marginalized in history and giving them a voice to tell their tale, I was inspired by the energy and interest in IPNE. Many indie authors and writing and publishing groups of all kinds asked questions about IPNE, and wanted to get involved. While Boston Book Festival’s “Indie Alley” experiment didn’t go well last year, we were in the heart of all the activity, and it’s a pleasure to be a part of such a vibrant organization.

    IPNE enjoyed meeting Rhode Island authors and displaying members' books at the ARIA  Expo in West Warwick, RI on Nov. 8.

    Whew! It has been a super busy fall for JMD Publishing, with three big book shows: The New England Independent Booksellers, New England Library Association, and most recently, the Boston Book Festival!

    This was my first experience exhibiting with IPNE at these shows, and I just want to say kudos to all the organizers as everything went so smoothly, and I was thrilled with the way my (new) publishing company was able to be introduced to the community. And, what a fantastic way to hit all areas of the marketplace in a period of one month! We chatted with booksellers at NEIBA, talked with librarians at NELA and then of course, the public, at BBF. 

    I was so happy to see how encouraging the library community was of independent and self-publishing. It was truly refreshing! At Boston Book Festival everyone was so enthusiastic about  Little Mouse's Adventures at Fenway Park, and my author, Brittany Bang, was so happy to be steadily signing books for the whole hour! 

    Thank you again to everyone for all your hard work. I look forward to growing my company within this very supportive community!
