    Two experienced professionals recently brought their expertise to the IPNE Board of Directors. Publisher and author Ruth Crocker of Elm Grove Press becomes our new Vice President, and Brian Jud's IPNE portfolio includes Special Projects and coordinating marketing and membership efforts between IPNE and APSS (Association of Publishers for Special Sales).

    Ruth W. Crocker is a writing coach and an award-winning author. Her essays have appeared in The Gettysburg Review, Grace Magazine, O-Dark-Thirty, T.A.P.S. Magazine, The Saturday Evening Post, several anthologies and in many on-line and print magazines. She is listed in Best American Essays 2013 and was nominated for a Pushcart Prize in 2014. She publishes and writes about family, resilience, remembrance, the art of living and the writing process. She was recently honored by an invitation to the White House on Memorial Day, 2014, where she presented to President Obama with her memoir, Those Who Remain: Remembrance and Reunion After War. The book also won an award at the IBPA's Ben Franklin Awards in April. She is the founder of Elm Grove Press, an independent press committed to publishing innovative work from emerging and established writers.

    Ruth holds a PhD in Nutrition and Human Development from the University of Connecticut, a Master of Education and Counseling from Tufts University and a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from Bennington College. She lives in Mystic, Connecticut.

    Brian Jud is an author, book-marketing consultant, speaker, seminar leader, television host, President of Book Marketing Works and a partner in Premium Book Company, which sells books to non-bookstore buyers on a non-returnable, commission basis. He is also the Executive Director of APSS, the Association of Publishers for Special Sales (formerly SPAN).

    Brian is the author of How to Make Real Money Selling Books (Without Worrying About Returns), called the "ultimate do-it-yourself guide to selling your books to non-bookstore buyers in large quantities, with no returns." He also wrote Beyond the Bookstore (a Publishers Weekly® book), a primer on non-bookstore marketing.

    Brian wrote and published five titles on career transition that are distributed internationally. He is a prolific presenter and writer of articles about book publishing and marketing. He is a syndicated columnist and a regular contributor to the IBPA newsletter, Bound to Sell, The Authority, The Sales Informer and Book Marketing Update. He is the author of the eight ebooklets with Proven Tips for Publishing Success and creator of the series Book Marketing Wizards. He edits the bi-weekly newsletter, Book Marketing Matters.

    Brian conducts the bi-weekly Book Marketing 201® webinars for APSS. He is a speaker in the series of Masters of Marketing seminars held in cities around North America. His other credits include 650 episodes of the television series The Book Authority, creator of the media-training video program You're On The Air and the books It’s Show Time and Perpetual Promotion. Brian is also a media and sales force trainer.

    Brian was an adjunct lecturer of sales and marketing courses for graduate and undergraduate students at the University of Hartford and the University of Connecticut. Brian is a regular speaker on marketing topics at IBPA’s Publishing University and for publishing groups around the country. Brian has a BS degree in Marketing from the University of Cincinnati and an MBA in Marketing from Xavier University. He also founded the Connecticut Authors and Publishers Association (CAPA).

    The New England Authors Expo will take place on Wednesday, July 29th at the Danvers Yacht Club, 161 Elliott Street (Rte. 62), Danvers, MA 01923.  Doors are open to the public from 4pm to 9pm. If you are a reader, local author or interested in sponsoring the event please visit newenglandauthorsexpo.com.

    The New England Authors Expo is the largest grassroots literary event in New England with over 200 authors, illustrators, publishers, printers and other publishing professionals present. Each of the authors will have signed copies of their books for sale representing genres including mystery, suspense, fantasy, science fiction, romance, horror, history, true crime, children’s and young adult. Admission is FREE to the public and includes a raffle ticket for great door prizes. There will also be presentations geared to answer questions about becoming an author covering such topics as how to begin, options for getting published and how to tell the world.

    Stop by and visit Author T. Stephens who will donate proceeds of all copies of his debut novel, Dante’s Cypher, sold at the Expo to the Boys & Girls Club. This has been made possible by ProEx Physical Therapy who has sponsored T. Stephens’ appearance on 7/29. This sponsorship will enable all book sales to be donated to the James L. McKeown Boys & Girls Club of Woburn providing more than fifty years of consecutive service to young people in Woburn and 25 other Massachusetts communities.

    Got your summer on yet? The Kittery Block Party is just one of the fun, book-related events for indies to check out this summer.

    Author Ariele Sieling, founder of New England Independent Writers and an active member of Independent Publishers of New England attended the Kittery, Maine Block Party June 20 to gauge the crowd and try to sell some books. 

    A real, living, breathing author!The Kittery Block Party proved to be great fun and quite productive for me. The festive air lasted all day long as bands played and hundreds of people strolled by my table, carrying balloons, delicious-looking french fries, and items that they had purchased from the wide variety of vendors that lined the streets.

    Many people stopped to talk to me, curious about the books that peeked out from among the scarves, garden decorations, and handmade knits sold by local vendors. 

    I met other authors, children, parents, grandparents, and even a group of teenagers walking around on six-foot stilts. But what really caught my attention were the two pirates with real parrots who patrolled the festival - one of them had a real, actual, genuine peg leg! Gotta love these Mainers.

    Ariele brought her famous "Unicorn Sheep" as inexpensive crowd-attractors.These events are fun once you get your event display system streamlined, and they can yield real results for indie authors. Keep your eyes peeled at other events this summer for IPNE members, NEIW members, and solo authors.

    Ariele Sieling, NH author and founder of New England Independent Writers, writes Pratchett-style science fiction, and works to blend the potential for human capacity and future technology with a little bit of humor. She is author of The Wounded World, The Clock Winked, and The Lonely Whelk, as well as the children's book Rutherford the Unicorn Sheep Goes to the Beach. She lives in New Hampshire with her three cats, Goblin, Rowan, and the internationally famous Wilfred.

    Book Expo America - LOGOAs sea changes continue to disrupt traditional publishing, it will be interesting to see what IPNE board member Brian Jud (APSS & CAPA), has to report from Book Expo America (#BEA2015). Jud and IPNE co-founder and former President, Tordis Ilg Isselhardt (Images From The Past), attended the nation's premier book show in New York City on May 28-30.

    We are pleased to announce that entries for the 2nd Annual IPNE Book Awards are open through July 31st for books published in 2013, 2014, and 2015 with one category open to perennial sellers that continue to be promoted and sold year after year.

    An IPNE Book Award can help you succeed as an independent author or publisher... whether or not you win! Winning or placing in the IPNE Book Awards can help your book rise to the top and cause readers to seek it out.
