Exhibit Curation Guidelines

IPNE exhibits at the major book shows are curated. By this process, our intent is to raise the overall quality of books that readers and industry professionals can discover through the public face of IPNE.

This process is designed to enhance the reputation of the organization as a whole and its members individually, as it does with similar organizations.

Books will be considered for exhibit if they meet A and B, below:

A. ONE OR MORE OF THESE:

  1. IPNE Award winners or finalists.
  2. Winners or finalists of other established awards programs.
  3. Books accepted to previous shows under curation guidelines.
  4. Books on established trade organization publication lists (see guidelines).
  5. Library of Congress Catalog Number.
B. AND BOTH OF THESE:
  1. Publisher has completed, signed, and submitted our curation checklist.
  2. Completed IPNE profile, including book metadata and cover images.

If you don't meet at least one of the first set of 5 qualifications, send a copy of the book by the shipping deadline of the event at which you wish to exhibit. Books that do not meet the currently posted guidelines will be returned and exhibit fees refunded; and publishers will be offered mentoring sessions and resources to help their books meet curation for future exhibits. Final curation approval rests with the IPNE Board of Directors.

The Independent Publishers of New England participates in three major cooperative book-marketing events each fall, and a number of smaller ones.

The "Big Three" this year include:

  1. New England Independent Booksellers Assn. (NEIBA). Reach 1,000 regional booksellers, agents, distributors, and readers.
  2. New England Library Assn. (NELA). Reach 600 regional librarians.
  3. The Boston Book Festival (BBF), every October in Copley Square, Boston. Event draws estimated 15,000 avid readers.
You'll also find IPNE exhibits and members at events like the Boston Book Festival's Hubbub children's festival in Boston; Bookstock in Woodstock, Vermont; New England  Authors Expo in Danversport, MA; the ARIA Authors Expo in Rhode Island; League of Vermont Writers; and other regional festivals, town days and markets. Suggest one in your area!

Farther afield? Not to worry - you don't have to attend, or even be in New England, to exhibit at most of our events; though you may wish to attend when you can. It's fun to mingle and help other Indies; you'll get backstage access to excellent networking; and you'll be able to represent your books as only you can! Click here to join one of our event Project Teams.

Perhaps best of all, exhibiting with IPNE is a small fraction of the cost of mounting a full exhibit on your own. Our volunteers get to know your books and represent them with genuine enthusiasm, even after the shows are over. Please join us!

Join us at Bridgeside Books in Waterbury, VT

IPNE Vermont regional group will meet after   member and author/illustrator Sarah Dillard's 10:30 reading of "I Wish It Would Snow" at Bridgeside Books in Waterbury VT on Dec. 15. We expect the IPNE branch meeting to start about 11:30.

Come for the reading, stay for the publishing and fellowship. Some of us will be going cross-country skiing after the event, so join us if you wish!

What is the mission of IPNE regional groups?

IPNE regional group meetings draw indie authors, editors. small publishers, and representatives from IPNE and other organizations. At each bi-monthly meetup, we update individual projects, brainstorm challenges, and discuss topics ranging from finding the right publishing platform to editing and design to marketing and beyond.

IPNE now has six member-run regional groups - South Shore (MA), Cape & Islands; Vermont; Rhode Island; Maine; SE Mass., and Metro Boston. The groups are free for anyone to join and come with some nice IPNE perks. Join one* or start your own with IPNE's support!

The benefits of joining or coordinating a regional group

If you want to coordinate a regional group, you'll get a free IPNE membership for as long as you keep the group going. Suggested frequency for in-person meetups is monthly or bi-monthly, but individual groups are welcome to decide how often they meet. Libraries, churches, bookstores are all good locations. Meetings will be posted on the IPNE website and invitations emailed to nearby IPNE members. Contact the IPNE President or the Regional Branches Manager for guidelines and benefits.

About our regional branch coordinator: After a stint as an editor in Seattle, Charlotte Pierce served as managing editor for Home Office Computing Magazine (Scholastic) in New York (1985-1989). She moved to Boston to start Pierce Press in 1989. An IPNE member since 2007, Charlotte has served in several positions on the board, including president (2015-2017). Metro Boston is currently seeking a coordinator for the next 2-year cycle.
